The new housing market may be slower but existing homeowners are doing extensive Google searches for home improvements and renovations, according to a new study. Can you guess which states lead the country?
As often happens when the housing market slows down, the market for home improvement projects increases and new data compiled by Constructor Growth Networks shows certain states in the country leading the way.
In analyzing Google searches for “search terms related to home renovations, extensions, and contractors,” the study shows South Dakota as the number one state in such searches, averaging 1,303 per 100,000 residents. The study shows the number one term South Dakotans searched for was roofing contractors, logical given the harsh weather in the state.
Delaware was the number two state, with 1,263 searches a month per 100,000 residents. Its top search term was “concrete contractor,” which makes sense given what New England winters do to sidewalks and driveways.
Oregon was third, at 1,245 searches per 100,000 residents. Its most searched term was “bathroom renovations” which…well, we’re at a loss to explain why that is.
Rounding out the Top 10 were: Vermont, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Florida and California. And, because you were dying to know, here are the bottom five states searching for home improvement terms: 46, New Mexico; 47, Alabama; 48, Oklahoma; 49, Mississippi; and 50, Kentucky. You’re welcome to draw your own conclusions.
