Fixing decorating and remodeling mistakes ranks high for homeowners’ “To-Do” lists, says new Thumbtack study.
Homeowners are getting busy this spring and summer with all kinds of repair and remodeling projects, many of which involve bringing in tradespeople to do the dirty work.
A big job for many will be undoing previous design choices they or a former resident made, especially when it comes to floor and wall coverings. More than half of the people who searched Thumbtack looking for help in their projects specifically said getting rid of carpeting and wallpaper were major priorities this season. Thumbtack said that means painting and putting in hard surface flooring were going to be top choices for home projects. “Beyond a stylistic choice, old carpet can also have a huge health impact, as it accumulates dust and pollutants and decreases the home’s air quality,” the new report said. “Replacing carpets with vinyl plank or engineered hardwood are great alternatives.”
When it came to walls, “the number one most-booked project ahead of summer is interior painting. Homeowners are increasingly looking to make a change—even floor painting/coating was up 40 percent year-over-year.”
Other home improvement jobs that showed up in Thumbtack’s database of millions of projects included HVAC and air conditioning work, smart home electronics, window tinting and clean-up from natural disasters like floods.
The top ten most booked indoor improvement projects, its research showed, were:
And in what has to be seen as good news for the home improvement business, Thumbtack reported that a “majority of homeowners told us they plan to spend $30,000 on home repairs, maintenance and improvements in the next year alone.”
