A program at Thomas Jefferson University is keyed to today’s emphasis on sustainability in the building and design trade.
Sustainability has certainly become one of the hottest topics in the building and design sector but learning the skills to master this discipline has never been harder.
It’s why an ongoing program from Thomas Jefferson University – which merged with Philadelphia University in 2017 – that offers a master’s degree in sustainable design is getting much attention these days. The graduate program was created in 2007 but has been gradually expanded over the years.
“The Sustainable Design program at Thomas Jefferson University was developed by a group of the country’s top sustainable designers and experienced sustainability professors,” the school’s website states. “The result is an award-winning, transdisciplinary, collaborative design program. Students build problem-solving skills to develop market-driven solutions, to become leaders in sustainable design to better serve society.”
Students can earn certificates in individual areas such as sustainability leadership and design of living buildings or can choose to take the entire MS degree. Classes are offered both on campus in the Philadelphia metropolitan area or online and can be taken in a combination.
The University says the program includes “high-performing sustainable design projects to sustainable initiatives for non-profits and start-ups. Industry partnerships feature prominently, providing networking opportunities and hands-on practice with real-world challenges. Strong integration with the design and sustainability community in Philadelphia provides students and graduates ample opportunities for internships, volunteer positions, and job placement.”
Faculty members include theory-based full-time professors as well as practicing professionals with diverse backgrounds in architecture, engineering, design, sustainability leadership, and construction management.
