Trending in Garage Cabinetry Remodels: a Place to Charge Electric Cars

New York, NY—Garage Living, a home organization and remodeling franchiser with 36 locations across the U.S. and Canada, says nearly every garage interior project it does now includes plans for an electric car.

Before Garage Living Makeover

The company says the most underutilized space in many homes may come as a surprise—the existing garage. Owners increasingly enter through their garages, making it the front door for 60 percent of homes, adding to the desire to make it attractive and presentable. A Wall Street Journal survey done in 2016 found that only 11 percent of homeowners are satisfied with their garage and wouldn’t want to improve it.

After Garage Living Makeover. For this makeover, Garage Living built out custom cabinetry, providing the homeowners with ample space to store tools and sports equipment. Above the cabinetry, a spot for spare tires. Slatwalls on either side add hanging storage.

Over the last three years, Garage Living noted a marked increase in clients looking to update their garages. It completed 3,800 garage makeovers in 2019; and in 2020, that number jumped to 5,200 and in 2021, the company completed 7,500 projects. In 2022, the company is on track to complete 8,000.

At IWF 2022, a full-day symposium addressing the fast-growing closets and garages market will be held August 22, the day prior to the show opening.

“Reducing clutter is often our clients’ number one ask,” says Aaron Cash, president and co-founder of Garage Living. A recent poll by Garage Living found that 20 percent of homeowners can’t park in their garage because so cluttered and disorganized.

Garage Living surveys client garages to determine bespoke storage solutions. As the industry leader in custom garage transformations, Garage Living’s cabinetry and slatwall systems not only streamline each space but also provide homeowners with a multi-purpose room.

For one such makeover, Garage Living built out custom cabinetry, providing space to store tools and sports equipment. Above the cabinetry is a spot to keep spare tires when not in use. Slatwalls on either side of the cabinets allow for hanging storage to be added in the future.

In a partnership with Volvo Car USA, Garage Living designed this garage interior built to support electric vehicles.

Garage Living says it not only organizes a place for cars, bikes, and trucks, it can also do designs re-imagining the garage as a home gym or any type of room. Last year the franchiser partnered with Volvo Car USA to design a garage space suitable for charging electric cars. Recharge Garage, was based off Garage Living’s Designer Series of the same name, supporting sustainability and versatility to match the lifestyle of electric vehicle owners.

“The demand for electric vehicle adapted garages continues to grow,” says Cash. “Approximately 40 percent of our design consultations on existing garages and virtually 100 percent of new build garages now factor in an electric vehicle.”

After an initial consultation, on-site visit, and product selection, projects typically take two to four days to install. U.S. franchise locations include Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. And in Canada, it is located in major cities in the Provinces, including Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg.
