Wood has proven itself to be incredibly versatile in its end uses but even we were surprised to find out that a Finnish company has created what it says is the world’s first toilet created entirely out of wood.
Woodio, a design company out of Finland, has taken wood to one of its most unusual end uses – so to speak – with its development of a toilet made entirely of wood.
According to the design website Dezeen, the wall-mounted toilet, which Woodio calls Block, was made using a material developed by its founder Petro Lahtinen that is around 80% wood by volume, incorporating locally sourced aspen and offcuts from the Finnish forest industry. Dezeen reported that the wood chips were mixed with a combination of polyester and bioplastic resins to create a composite that is both waterproof and “practically unbreakable,” according to the company.
In addition to the new use for wood, the manufacturing of the product “reportedly generates 99% fewer emissions in its production than ceramics,” Dezeen said. The website did not say if the product was a design prototype or if Woodio planned to put Block into production.
