Even as the overall housing market remains soft, it appears that the remodeling side of the business is driving sales of kitchen and bathroom cabinets over last year’s numbers.
New data from the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association shows that its members reported an increase in overall cabinet sales, by dollar revenue, of 8.6% for the month of April versus the same period a year ago. For the year-to-date through the first four months of 2023, overall sales of cabinets were also up, 7.6% in revenue.
However, for both April and the year-to-date, unit sales are off: 3.4% for the month and 11.7% for the four months. For both the month and the first third of 2023, it is custom and semi-custom sales that are driving the increases. Custom sales, in dollars, were up 2.5% for the month and 19% for the four months. Semi-custom sales registered a 20.4% hike for April and 13.3% for the year to date. The declines are coming in sales of stock cabinets, both for the month and year to date: 17.2% for the former and 20.7% for the latter.
