The first use of mass timber for a municipal facility in Georgia has opened in the Atlanta suburb of Brookhaven.
Opening ceremonies were held several weeks ago at the new $78 million Brookhaven City Hall for the landmark construction in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The new building, at 4047 Peachtree Road, is next to Atlanta metro transit system MARTA’s Brookhaven-Oglethorpe University Rail Station and marks the first step in creating a city center for the town, which was only incorporated as a free-standing municipality in 2012.
It features exposed wood throughout upper levels—offering carbon sequestration benefits, reduced construction waste and durability, developers said according to a report on its opening. The five-story timber building houses Brookhaven’s administrative offices and city council chambers, but about half of the complex will be open to the general public.
Ground was broken in October of 2023 for the 58,250-square-foot structure which also features a white dome, a rooftop garden, terraces and a three-story atrium. The builders said the new facility was designed to achieve WELL Gold and LEED certification. “Brookhaven City Center establishes a new standard for municipal design in Georgia, and we’re proud to have helped realize this vision,” Rob Schulten of Barnsley Construction Group said in an announcement.
