You’ll be surprised to find out that even though Home Depot retains its spot on top of the sector, Lowe’s is no longer number two according to a new Coresight Research study.
The retail marketplace for home improvement continues to evolve and a new study from a well-known research and consulting company says the second largest player in the sector is now Walmart.
According to Coresight Research’s U.S. Consumer Survey Insights, 47 percent of home improvement shoppers in the country say they buy from Walmart, “pushing it into second place, behind only The Home Depot.”
The consulting company says Lowe’s slid to number three and cited the overall economic conditions in the country for Walmart’s gains, though it did not elaborate.
Walmart also was the leading retailer for home furnishings products in the country, Coresight’s research found, with “47 percent of home furnishings shoppers making it the most shopped retailer for furnishings in our latest survey.”
Coresight’s proprietary research, only available to subscribers, “takes a regular temperature check on U.S. consumers’ behaviors and sentiment, based on exclusive survey data.” The latest data points in this report are from its survey conducted on May 26, 2025.
This new survey also examines consumers’ expectations for the economy overall and for their own personal financial situation and whether consumers have bought home-furnishings and home-improvement products in the past three months. It also looks at what consumers have bought in-store versus online in the last two weeks. More information including paid access to the full report is available at Coresight.com.
