Floor & Decor Expands in the West

The specialty building products chain is opening its 29th California location with additional stores elsewhere in the country on tap as well.

Even as the building trade continues to face slowdowns in new home construction as well as existing remodeling projects, the retailer is continuing its expansion plans seeking to gain market share. Its newest location opened last month in Lancaster, CA, about 70 miles northeast of Los Angeles. This brings its total store count to 257 around the country, including the 29 in California.

But California is not the only state getting new locations. The retailer said that over the coming weeks, it expects to open stores in North Scottsdale, AZ, Murfreesboro, TN and Gastonia and Winston-Salem, NC.

“We’re always evaluating new markets, and our focus is on areas where customer demand is strong and where customers will benefit from our incredible selection and everyday low prices,” Coleen Marritt, senior vice president of pro services and commercial sales, said in a recent interview.

The new Lancaster location, according to a report on its opening, “features in-stock flooring materials spanning tile, wood, laminate, vinyl and natural stone, as well as decorative accessories, wall tile, installation materials and adjacent categories, with the assortment specific to the neighborhood’s trends and culture. It also offers customers free design services.”

Floor & Decor, which like others in the building materials retail sector, is also stepping up its efforts to serve professional builders, just finished its month-long program called “PRO Appreciation Month” that included free educational sessions and other events, marking the sixth year it has hosted this program. “When you know the products (brands, tools, installation nuances), you can work more efficiently and stay aligned with the latest in-flooring installation standards,” said Marritt in the interview. “On-demand webinars are useful for busy schedules. Meanwhile, smaller ‘lunch & learn’ options allow learning without having to take a lot of time from work.”
