The nation’s largest home builder gets a bigger foothold in the growing southeastern region of the country.
The deal gives Horton, which is based in Arlington, TX and has built over one million homes since being founded in 1978, access to more than 1,900 home building sites that SK owns or has options on. SK will retain its land development arm and continue to operate it independently from the newly merged company. Terms of the deal were not announced.
In reporting on the acquisition the Builder’s Daily newsletter called it a “tuck-in,” that was “about securing durable wedges of market share in growth corridors where private builders, often family-owned, are straining under capital constraints and succession challenges.”
SK Builders, which is based in Greer, SC and was founded in 1994, was the largest privately owned homebuilder in the upstate region of South Carolina, one of the five largest builders in Greenville, and one of the ten largest in neighboring Spartanburg. Headed by Tim and Russell Kalliainen, SK Builders specialized in entry-level single-family homes, the report said.
“For Horton – whose core competency is delivering entry-level and first-move-up homes at scale – SK Builders’ land, product mix and community presence represent a plug-and-play match,” Builder’s Daily wrote.
