The purpose of the Challengers Distinguished Achievement Award ® is to encourage and promote the development of innovative new technology in the field of woodworking machinery, supplies, and services for the furniture, kitchen cabinets, architectural woodwork, store fixture, upholstery, or specialty and general wood product industries.   For IWF 2010 the competition had 80 entries.  Following  are the 22 finalist entries that will be competing at the show for the coveted Challengers Award tropies.

ProCAB QC

ProCAB QC is a Windows application for documenting the dimensional quality of fabricated or purchased parts such as cabinet doors.  ProCAB QC imports existing customer data, allows random simultaneous height & width measurements, automatically finds the part being measured, applies user defined measurement tolerances to accept or reject the part, records the measurement information and optionally creates a packing slip on order completion.  Measurement consistency among operators is also remarkably improved. By using digital technology, measured readings are consistent among all users.  There is no longer a need for special training on “how to measure” and no more “tape reading” mistakes or ambiguity based on who is making the measurement.

Accu-Systems introduces the DBJ Drawer Machine. The DBJ is a multi-axis/station Drawer Box Machining Center designed to the entire box from dimensioned material. The machine can be configured to do English and French Dovetails Drawers. It can also drill holes for mounting drawer fronts, route for the under mount drawer glides, and route the drawer bottom grooves.

Introducing the first truly authentic “Stainless Steel” moulding and 5 piece cabinet door employing materials that are easily cut and assembled using conventional woodworking tools and hardware.  An innovative acrylic material wrapped over MDF, simulating the look of Stainless Steel and permanently bonded to the MDF using high quality PUR glues, this moulding has the ability to wrap around various profiles to allow for customization and flexiblity of design. It can also be used for various choices of mouldings including Crowns and Cornices.  The substrate is .007 to .250 mils Styrene, and final product is fabricated using conventional wood-working tools such as Router and saw.  This laminate resists abrasion and exhibits no visible change when tested with 0000 steel wool. Laminate also has excellent resistance to alcohols, ketones, hydrocarbons, esters, mild acids, salt solutions and most household cleansers.  In laboratory testing this material displays high degree of hardness and heat deflection capability.

The new reciprocating knife cutter can cut veneers, carpets, felts, laminates, cork and soft plastics etc. During cutting with the oscillating knife cutter the spring-loaded floating ring ensures optimum contact of the material with the surface underneath.  Similar to a jigsaw, very small radiuses can be cut.  The very high reciprocating speed of up to 6.000 strokes per minutes ensures very effective machining with high federate speeds. The reciprocating knife cutter requires a machine equipped with a C-axis.
